50 Best Midjourney Prompts (Copy-Paste Ready)

AI Prompts

Midjourney generates images from text prompts. The quality of what you get depends almost entirely on how specific your prompt is. A vague prompt produces a generic image. A detailed prompt with clear subject, style, lighting, and parameters produces something you can actually use.

These 50 prompts are ready to copy and use. Paste any of them into Midjourney after /imagine in Discord, or directly into the Midjourney web interface at midjourney.com.

How to modify them: Each prompt is a template. Swap the subject, change the color palette, adjust the aspect ratio (--ar), or add your own style references. The parameters at the end control aspect ratio (--ar), Midjourney version (--v 6), and rendering style (--style raw for more photographic output). You can remove --style raw if you prefer Midjourney’s default aesthetic treatment.

What is Midjourney

Midjourney is an AI image generator that creates images from text descriptions. You describe what you want: subject, style, lighting, mood, aspect ratio. Midjourney generates a set of images based on that description.

Unlike stock photography, every image Midjourney produces is unique. Unlike hiring a photographer or illustrator, you get results in seconds. The quality ceiling is high: Midjourney is currently among the strongest AI image tools available for photorealistic scenes, painted portraits, fantasy environments, and cinematic stills.

The tradeoff is control. You can’t direct Midjourney the way you direct a photographer. What you can do is write more specific prompts, which is exactly what this collection helps with.

Version note: These prompts are written for Midjourney Version 6, which is included as --v 6 in every prompt. If a newer version is available when you use them, swap --v 6 for --v 7 (or drop the parameter entirely to use Midjourney’s current default). The prompt structure and style references work across versions; the parameter just tells Midjourney which model to run.

Understanding the parameters

Every prompt in this list includes parameters at the end. Here’s what they do:

  • –ar [ratio]: Aspect ratio. 16:9 is landscape (good for wallpapers and scenes), 4:5 is portrait-oriented social media, 1:1 is square, 21:9 is ultrawide cinematic.
  • –v 6: Uses Midjourney Version 6. Drop this if you want Midjourney to default to its current version when you run the prompt.
  • –style raw: Reduces Midjourney’s aesthetic post-processing for a more photographic result. Remove it if you want the default painted or enhanced treatment.

How to customize any prompt

Every prompt is a starting point. The most useful modifications:

Change the subject. Swap “a woman” for “a man in his 60s” or “a teenager”. The rest of the prompt stays the same.

Change the color palette. Add “warm amber tones,” “cool blue-grey color grade,” or “monochrome” anywhere in the prompt to shift the mood.

Add a specific location. “Scottish highlands” gives you a general highland look. “Glen Coe at dawn” gives you something more specific.

Reference a specific artist or film. Style references work well. “In the style of Edward Hopper,” “Wes Anderson color palette,” or “shot by Annie Leibovitz” each produce meaningfully different results from a generic description alone.

Change the aspect ratio. –ar 9:16 gives a vertical format for Instagram Stories or TikTok. –ar 16:9 works for YouTube thumbnails and desktop wallpapers.

Tips for Getting Better Midjourney Results

  • Be specific about lighting — Lighting is one of the biggest factors in whether an image looks professional or generic. “Soft natural light” produces a very different result from “dramatic single-source side lighting” or “golden hour backlight.” Add a lighting description to any prompt that does not already have one.
  • Use camera and lens references — “Canon 85mm f/1.4” or “medium format Hasselblad” tells Midjourney what depth of field and image quality to aim for. This works because Midjourney has learned from millions of photographs tagged with camera data.
  • Add “ultra detailed” or “ultra sharp” for complex scenes — For fantasy environments or architectural scenes with many elements, these push Midjourney to resolve more detail rather than leaving areas soft or abstract.
  • Use –style raw when you want photorealism — Midjourney’s default processing adds a slightly painterly or enhanced quality. If you want something that looks like an actual photograph, adding –style raw suppresses that treatment.
  • Generate four variations and pick the best one — Midjourney returns four images per prompt. Don’t judge a prompt by a single generation. Use the U1-U4 buttons to upscale your favourite, and V1-V4 to get variations of the image you like most.

Who Should Use These Midjourney Prompts

  • Content creators who need images for their posts and newsletters — Blog thumbnails, social media visuals, and newsletter headers are the most common use cases. These prompts are built so you can paste and run without needing to learn Midjourney’s syntax from scratch.
  • Designers using Midjourney as a concept tool — Before committing time and budget to production, designers use Midjourney to explore visual directions and build mood boards. At this stage, speed matters more than pixel-perfect output, which is where AI generation has a clear advantage.
  • Writers, game developers, and worldbuilders who need visual references — Character visualization, environment concept work, and scene setting all work well in Midjourney. You describe the world; it gives you something to react to.
  • Marketers building campaign concepts for client review — Generating visual directions quickly for approval rounds is faster and cheaper than commissioning assets before a concept is locked. Use these prompts for concept review, not final production.
  • Not a fit for: images that need exact element control — If you need specific real people, accurate readable text inside the image, or precise object placement, Midjourney is the wrong tool for that. Plan to combine it with editing software like Photoshop or Canva for those requirements.

Midjourney Prompt Limitations

  • Results are not reproducible — Two identical prompts generate different images each time. If you find a version you like, save it immediately. You can’t regenerate it exactly without the original seed number (use the –seed parameter to lock it for future runs).
  • Hands and readable text are consistent weak points — Hands often have wrong finger counts, and any text Midjourney generates inside an image is usually garbled or unreadable. For images where these matter, plan to edit the output in Photoshop or use Adobe Firefly’s Generative Fill for those specific areas.
  • It requires a paid subscription — Midjourney removed its free tier in early 2024. The basic plan starts at around $10 per month for approximately 200 image generations. Check midjourney.com for current pricing, as plans change.

Conclusion

A good Midjourney prompt doesn’t just describe a subject. It describes a subject, a style, a light source, a mood, and sometimes a specific camera or artist reference. The prompts in this list are built that way so you get a usable result from the first generation rather than iterating through vague descriptions.

Copy any prompt, run it, then modify based on what you get back. Midjourney rewards iteration: the gap between a first attempt and a fifth is usually significant. The prompts here are starting points, not endpoints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay to use Midjourney?

Yes. Midjourney removed its free tier in 2024. The cheapest plan is around $10 per month (Basic Plan), which gives approximately 200 image generations per month. The Standard Plan at $30 per month includes unlimited relaxed-mode generation, which suits most regular users. Check midjourney.com for current pricing as plans change.

Can I use Midjourney images commercially?

On paid plans, Midjourney grants you a license to use images commercially, including for client work, merchandise, and publication. Read Midjourney’s terms of service before using images in commercial contexts at scale, as the details matter depending on your use case.

What is the difference between –v 6 and newer versions?

Midjourney releases updates periodically. Version 6 introduced significantly better photorealism and text rendering than v5. If a newer version is available when you use these prompts, try it. Newer versions generally improve photorealistic styles, though they can sometimes make fantasy and painterly styles look more polished than intended.

Why does my result look different from what I expected?

The most common causes: the style reference pulled in associations you did not intend, the aspect ratio affected the composition, or Midjourney interpreted an ambiguous term differently. The fix is usually adding one more specific detail: a lighting direction, a camera angle, or an explicit exclusion using the –no parameter (e.g., –no text, –no people).

Can I use these prompts in other AI image tools?

Most will work in DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion with minor adjustments. The main difference is that DALL-E 3 doesn’t use Midjourney’s parameter system (–ar, –v, –style), so remove those and describe the aspect ratio and style in plain language instead. Stable Diffusion uses a different prompting approach where negative prompts are separate, and model selection matters significantly for style output.

How do I get consistent results across multiple images?

Use the –seed parameter followed by a number to lock in Midjourney’s starting noise pattern. This gives you more consistent composition and lighting across variations. You can also use the Style Reference (–sref) and Character Reference (–cref) parameters introduced in Version 6 to maintain a consistent look across a series of images.

What does –style raw actually do?

Midjourney applies its own aesthetic processing on top of your prompt by default. This tends to add a slightly painterly quality and enhanced contrast and color saturation. The –style raw flag turns off most of that post-processing, giving a more neutral, photographic result. For portrait photography and documentary-style images, raw usually produces more realistic results. For fantasy and illustration styles, removing it often gives richer, more stylized output.

Are these prompts suitable for Midjourney beginners?

Yes. Every prompt is copy-paste ready and includes the key parameters already set. You don’t need to understand what –ar or –style raw mean to use these. Paste the prompt and run it. Once you start getting results you like, the customization section above explains what each element does so you can adapt prompts to your specific needs.
